The Secret Garden (1993)

Screentime: 12 minutes and 58 seconds (13.1% of the film)

Based on a children’s classic, The Secret Garden is focuse on a young girl, Mary Lennox, whose unloving parents are killed in an earthquake in India. She is subsequently shipped to England to stay at her uncle’s large castle and here she meets a group of young children and begins exploring and discovering many secrets of the residence, including a hidden garden. The film is quite beautiful with a very nice musical score, cinematography and decent acting from the leads, a nice relaxing movie without any complicated plot/storylines.

FILM:

Maggie Smith plays Mrs. Medlock, the strict and stern caretaker of the mansion. Her role for most of the film is quite a one dimensional part, she is an uncompromising and frazzled woman trying to maintain her employers expectations. But what we learn is not only are her own interests of high importance, but also of the wellbeing of the children she is taking care of, especially that of the gravely ill Colin Craven. It didn’t seem to be a hard role for Maggie to pull off, but she is quite wonderful especially in her few final scenes, where her harsh demeanour finally breaks.
